Ivy & Rose Florist Frenchs Forest

You know the number one reason to support your local florist?

She will support you!

When Ivy & Rose opened up over three years ago, I was in the midst of a self-care kick. I bowled in and bought flowers for myself then continued to do so weekly, more or less.

The lovely owner Amanda always welcomes me with a huge smile and the best advice on which flowers are in season, which are super fresh and… what their names are… which I then immediately forget.

There’s nothing like shopping local. Small shops, huge feelings of being known and being connected.

Anyway, Amanda is a mother of three young children, sons aged five and three and a little daughter aged just two. Those children might keep her up at night, but she’s not afraid of rising early.

Amanda visits the Flower Market at Sydney Markets on Mondays and Fridays, returning with frothing masses of flowers; exotic blooms, sweet blossoms, fragrant roses and the most gorgeous natives.

Her 3.30am starts mean she finds the freshest and best flowers available.

The thing about flowers and florists is… they mark out so many special times in our lives. We buy flowers for new babies, for loved ones who are ill, and when people have died.

We use a gift of flowers as both a celebration and a commiseration too.

We decorate with flowers and use them to bring colour and life to our celebrations. Flowers for weddings, for christenings, and for funerals.

Your florist is there for you at times of joy and for the most painful of days too.

Whilst I’m in the shop taking these photographs, customers pop in and out.

One lady buys a posy of tea roses for an elderly gentleman who is ill in hospital. Another lady comes in to buy herself a big bunch of flowers and a scented candle.

‘Just because,” she says.

I feel like bursting into wild applause: hooray for self care!

Hooray for flowers that are not for gifts or for celebrations. They are simply for your visual pleasure and to scent your home sweetly.

And hooray and a big thank you to our local florists whose early mornings and expertise bring us such pleasure, such joy and such comfort.

And here’s the question, dear readers: do you buy flowers for yourself sometimes?

Or do you daftly wait for someone else to treat you?

Let’s look after ourselves and buy a bunch of flowers for the kitchen bench.

Just because.

And let’s get to know our local Sydney florist, and have them share the joys of life and its sadness.

And those ‘just because’ moments.

Love and a big bunch of flowers to you.
