Some Thoughts on Blogging – My Why

The funny thing is… it all started because I couldn’t take my oldest son to a playground unless it had a secure fence around it.
It was just too dangerous to do anything else. He was a wild one, oh yes.
That wee boy, now Mr19, turned out to have autism spectrum disorder and a healthy dose of ADHD along with it.
It also turned out that motherhood hadn’t switched off my wandering genes… so we explored our city, my wee wild boy and I.

And we loved to share tales of our adventures, at playground, preschool and wherever.
Parents love to share the cool stuff, the good stuff and especially the free stuff.
I was asking people where they loved to take the kids in Sydney. Then I’d always share any good tips about what had worked well for us: the bike tracks, playgrounds and beaches especially.
That love of sharing turned into a book called Sydney For Under Fives, and that book was magically transported online and has become Hello Sydney Kids.

Being outside is important
We knew that our wee boy needed to run around a lot, to charge around, to explore, to run wild… and as we had more kids we understood that they all do.
Being curious, inquisitive and having the space to explore is so good for children’s mental development as well as their bodies.
They crawl, they climb, they clamber… they stumble, they fall and they get back up again.
This is simple stuff but it’s totally crucial. Resilience, bravery and simple boldness depend upon it.

I have adored exploring and sharing Sydney’s top spots, and great places beyond Sydney.
Now, we have new writers being paid a little to share their favourite family spots with other mums and dads and carers.
Can I quietly add that learning about the techy side of blogging has been a thrill and a mental fandango. It’s been good for the grey matter.
And mixing with other bloggers has been good for the heart and soul.
I’m so sad not to be going to Problogger this year. Our current messy family circumstances mean it’s just impossible to get there.
I’ll learn a lot when I listen to the conference on audio. But nothing will make up for missing mixing with my contemporaries, laughing, sharing and being inspired for another year ahead.
Thus these thoughts put into words and also into images on this little slideshow I made using a new photo sharing site called ‘Shoebox Timeline.”
Great name!
I’ve written this post as part of the Ultimate Bloggers Kit Competition and enjoyed trialling ShoeBox Timeline as part of that.
I hope all the Problogger attendees have a wonderful time.
Have a drink and a blether for me
Cheers
