The Peasant Prince – New Show From Monkey Baa Theatre Company

One of our favourite big days out is to see a show in the city, have a play at a cool playground and then eat at a kid-friendly cafe.
We all then return home exhausted.
Monkey Baa Theatre Company presents an engaging show for kids each school holidays at the Lend Lease Darling Quarter Theatre.
The theatre is right beside one of the best water playgrounds in Sydney, click for all the info about it.
And, just to top it off, there are several good cafes right alongside the theatre and playground, plus the kiosk within the playground itself. We are spoiled.
But back to the show in question.
These April school holidays there’s a very special show on, The Peasant Prince.

The Peasant Prince – Mao’s Last Dancer Retold for Children
Li Cunxin (you say it “Lee Schwin Sing”) is the Chinese-Australian ballet dancer whose autobiography ‘Mao’s Last Dancer” was published to huge acclaim in 2003. The book later became a very successful film.

From an impoverished childhood in rural China, Li Cunxin is taken to the city and trains to become one of the best ballet dancers in the world. In many ways, this story is a real life fairytale, showing how passion and dedication can overcome all obstacles.
You have your secret dreams. Follow them. Make them come true.
Mao’s Last Dancer is retold as a picture book for children named The Peasant Prince. Its beautiful illustrations tell Li Cunxin’s complex story very simply and movingly.

Now the story is brought to life by the award-winning Monkey Baa Theatre Company in this show. Li Cunxin has been closely involved in the show, in fact he’s the script consultant on it.
The Peasant Prince starts in Sydney these April school holidays and then goes on to tour throughout Australia.

“Relaxed performances modify the so-called ‘theatre rules’ so the environment is as welcoming and inclusive as possible.
For example, the house lights may be left on during the show, patrons are able to exit whenever necessary, patrons can enter the theatre early to familiarise themselves with the theatre environment.”
This makes a show much easier for younger children and those with additional needs. As a mother of a son with ASD, I’m thrilled to see more theatres offering this sort of performance.

There was a giveaway on this post but it has now ended.
