Save Money on Petrol with the NRMA App : Compare Prices

You’d think that with a husband who’s worked for 25+ years in the oil and gas business I’d understand the ridiculous price fluctuations at petrol stations.

But no! I’ve been as confused as the next person as to why petrol stations charge more on some days than others.

Also, why some just seem cheaper than others most days. Che?

Brought to you by Nuffnang and NRMA

The NRMA has been pushing the NSW government for great transparency for years and have had a big win.

The NSW Dept. of Fair Trading now collects real-time fuel price data from around 2000 service stations throughout NSW.

The NRMA then feeds this data into its My NRMA app.

Clever. How do they do that?

The My NRMA App – Fuel Prices in Real Time

On the My NRMA app, you’ll see a Fuel section at the bottom. Click on that and you find the real-time prices of petrol stations. You can search by fuel price, location or fuel type.

On the photo below you’ll see where I am today in Orange, with the local petrol stations marked and you can see the cheapest two at the top. I can scroll down on the app to see all the local petrol prices.

On the right, you can see that the petrol stations in Bathurst are charging higher prices. So if travelling to Sydney, I’d buy my petrol in Orange for sure.

Here’s the story in Sydney in the area I live in, at exactly the same time.

On the right is where I often buy my petrol and on the left you’ll see that just a few km away the petrol is 26 cents lower.

I’m SHOCKED!

How Much I Can Save By Using the My NRMA App?

My wee car usually takes roughly 30 litres of petrol. So if today I filled up at my usual petrol station, it would cost $38.37

If I used the app and filled up at the cheapest local petrol station then it would cost $30.51.

That’s a saving of almost $8!!

I have been such an idiot for so many years!

NRMA estimate families can save around $500 a year if they fill up at the cheapest instead of the most expensive petrol station.

NB – You can use the My NRMA app without being a member.

What Other Benefits Might We See?

Consumers now can see clearly the different prices and this transparency should mean less price gouging in general.

“It’s not uncommon for motorists to see discrepancies of 35 cents a litre difference between petrol stations within close reach of each other. Now, those prices will be on show.”   NRMA President Kyle Loades

We are members of the NRMA and our family and cars have been rescued by the NRMA many times. Now our bank account is also being saved money as well.

Happy cheaper petrol hunting
