Singin' In The Rain – Musical Comedy Review

Talk about a feel-good show. Singin’ In The Rain had the audience roaring with laughter, and oohing and aaahing at the performers dancing, singing and showmanship.

And then there’s the special effects. Yes, there is real rain pouring down onto the stage for the iconic song, Singin’ In The Rain.

And the joy of the cast as they dance and sign in that rain is catching.

Singin’ In The Rain – The Story

You’ll know the 1952 movie starring Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O’Conner.

The plot of the current show follows the movie plot very closely. It’s 1927 and the era of silent movies is about to end with the arrival of the first talkie “The Jazz Singer.”

Silent movie star Don Lockwood and his demanding, vain co-star Lina Lamont pretend to have a love affair but the attraction is all from her side.

When Don meets a young actress, Kathy Selden, who isn’t bowled over by his fame, he’s won over.

Kathy has a beautiful voice and is persuaded to dub the first talking movie for Lina Lamont. The two don’t get along at all, there’s a pie in the face involved, plus good old-fashioned jealousy.

The making of the new movie, “The Dancing Cavalier”, involves some truly hilarious use of film where actress Erika Heynatz must wear out her vocal cords.

Don and Kathy fall in love, Lina’s machinations against Kathy come to nothing, the new movie is a hit. Happy endings all round.

This show just sizzles. The cast’s dancing is absolutely standout. My favourite numbers were those that involved a lot of tap and physical comedy.

Watching performers at the top of their game – and loving being there – really does transport the audience.

For me, the stand out character was Cosmo Brown, played by Jack Chambers. His performance of “Moses Supposes” was a tap dancing tour de force. It’s enough to make anyone sign straight up for a tap dancing class.

Erika Heynatz plays Lina Lamont, star of the silent movies, whose voice could shatter glass at 20 paces. She’s got a huge stage presence; her comedic timing is superb.

The costumes in this show are also stunnin’. The era being 1927, it’s all very lavish and stylish, with some gorgeous flapper styles, lots of tassels and pretty little hats.

If you love musical theatre, you’ll adore Singin’ In The Rain.

This feel-good dance extravaganza is totally uplifting, and for young dancers, singers and actors, would be an absolute inspiration.
