The Frustrations Of Bloody Family Food! Making One Meal To Suit Everyone In The Family

It’s spaghetti bolognaise for goodness sake! How hard can it be to feed my family spag bol!!

Like loads of my pals, I can find it hard to find one meal that suits everyone in the family.

It used to be the fussy twins and the strictly vegetarian Intn’l Man of Mystery who caused the problems grub-wise.

These days it’s me too. I’m a (just) 50+ menopausal mother and I just don’t need as many calories as the sprouting teenagers or the super active twins.

Well, I’ve got a few meals up my sleeve that can suit everyone, with a few minor adjustments.

I’ve been using Barilla’s wholewheat penne since I first heard about it over on my friend Charlie’s blog Hotly Spiced.  It’s not 100% wholemeal and I think that’s why the kids like it a lot more than other wholemeal pastas we’ve tried.  They’d still prefer white pasta all the time, I am sure, but luckily have me looking after their nutrition for them.

Barilla sent me some sauces to try recently and I’ve found the pesto very handy. It keeps for a long time, unlike the pesto from the deli that I usually get.

I can whip it out and slap it on some pasta for my hungry veggie husband with a wee touch of butter.

For myself, well, pasta is not my friend these days and I rarely eat it especially at night.  I put my bolognaise sauce, and loads of it, onto a big bed of salad and scoff it like that. Nutritional heaven!

This was a bol sauce whipped up in the Thermomix, just the usual one from the recipe book but with extra herbs, mushrooms and bacon – outrageous!

Add a simple salad… and we had a family meal that everyone liked!

There are six of us, plus we have a 20 year old family friend staying with us for a while. So sadly that bol sauce, made with 500g mince only serves one meal… it’s a big job feeding teenagers!

Other family meals that work with our veggie dad and my lower calorie needs are:

* baked potatoes with all sorts of fillings and salad

* sausage in wraps, meaty sausages and veggies

* a BBQ, haloumi for dad and hold the potato salad for mum

Errrr….. that’s about it.

I need more ideas!

I need the kids to eat more vegetarian food!

Do you try to cook one meal only for the family?

Any ideas to suit my mob?

Happy cooking
