The White Sands Walk at Jervis Bay: All You Need To Know

Bush and beach on the White Sands Walk at Jervis Bay
The White Sands Walk is the best known of the many beautiful walks around Jervis Bay.
And quite rightly, it’s a beaut walk, through the bush and past four stunning beaches, ending up at iconic Hyams Beach.
Where there’s a cafe, and a wonderful beach to swim at or walk some more.

The smaller beach at Hyams, crystal clear on a sunny spring day.
There are several ways to do this walk, and several distance options. So it could suit families with kids of all ages. You could even take a three-wheeler stroller if there were two of you.
There is one set of steps to negotiate, and one short stretch along the beach, otherwise the walk can all be done on bush tracks which are pretty good.
We walked with our twins who are fit and 11 years old. They insisted on wearing thongs, we carried their trainers but they managed the whole way in thongs.
From where we started in Vincentia, the walk was 7.7km long.

We started on the walkway that runs along Collingwood beach, going to Plantation Point and then onto the start of the White Sands Walk there, it’s just near the sailing club.

White Sands Walk beach walking options
This walk passes Nelson, Blenheim, Greenfields and Chinamans Beaches, and they are all equally divine on a sunny day.
You can start walking at any of these beaches, just look for the track heading out of the car park or play area.
A swim at each beach would be nice…. but our twins were whinging about walking and we kept them going all the way to Hyams where we swam and visited the cafe.
I’ve done this walk and actually walked along each of these beaches, just finding the bush track at the end of the beach each time. This takes much longer and is much more tiring though.

Our White Sands Walk: Collingwood Beach to Hyams Beach
From Collingwood Beach we stepped out of the garden and walked along the walk/cycle path towards Plantation Point.

This is part of the walkway that now runs all the way from Huskisson to Plantation Point

The views are sublime, you can see Plantation Point on the right there and Point Perpendicular on the left

A little bridge at the end of Collingwood Beach

You do have to join the road again at Twyford Avenue
But the walkway starts again at Minerva Avenue
Then you pop out onto Elizabeth Street opposite Lambs Crescent and walk along the pavement.
Bottlebrush trees with hoardes of rainbow lorikeets distracted us and we went up cutting across Lambs Crescent to meet the path as it leaves Plantation Point Parade and plunges into the bush.
There’s a map and info board here
In amongst the bush at first, you can see how good the track is
Do stop at the viewing points… views are glorious! That’s Nelson Beach below
If you check Google maps, you’ll see the walk marked there
There’s a car park and picnic area at Blenheim Beach
Blenheim Beach is small and very pretty, nice place to start the walk in fact if you have little kids
Then it’s back into the bush and away
There are some information boards along the tracks.
Next you will see Greenfields Beach below you. There are toilets and a reserve and picnic area at Greenfields too
Then there’s a bridge over a stream below
And, as you approach Chinamans Beach, the views are magnificent
The walk through the bush beside the sea is so pretty
Now at the start of Chinamans is the only place we got a bit lost. On Google maps it looks as if the track should go through the bush – but no.
You need to go down the steps and onto Chinamans Beach.
Chinamans is long and lovely, so you can walk right along it.
However, it’s easiest to walk to the rear of the beach straight away
And get back onto the bush track itself
It’s a few minutes walk to Hyams village streets, just walk along Cyrus street until you come to a turn down to the beach on the left.
I love this little beach between two headlands, we were VERY happy to be here
This is a beaut spot to swim, look how clear the water is, and the cafe and shop is just up there on Cyrus Street
The famous white sands of Hyams are best seen in the long beach which stretches from Hyams village all the way down to the naval village.
This would make a fantastic extra few kilometre walk to add to the White Sands Walk.
But we love to play and swim at the smaller beach.
The great thing about getting to Hyams after a 7km walk from home is that the sublime Hyams Beach Cafe awaits with open arms… and coffee and muffins.
Smoothies and hot chips for the kids and a veggie burger for starving husband.
The White Sands Walk- Return
We had cunningly driven in two cars to Hyams earlier in the day and left one there so that we could drive home.
Our twins had enjoyed the walk once they got into it, but there’s no way we’d have got them to walk all the way back to Collingwood Beach.
If you start at Plantation Point or Greenfields or Blenheim Beach then it’s only a 40 – 60 minute walk back.
You have the option of doing a loop walk called the Scribbly Gum track as an alternative on the way back.
On the Jervis Bay National Park website here, White Sands Walk is described as starting from Greenfield Beach picnic area.
Check out a map of the walk here, there is also info there on the Scribbly Gum Track.
But nowadays there are many options, with the track starting at Plantation Point, and the walkway which leads there from the town of Huskisson via Vincentia.
We loved our walk, and the swim at the end. And we certainly slept well that night.
