When Mums Just Can't Be Sick: Vicks Action Cold + Flu
Do you know the feeling? You’re sick but you know you just can’t be sick?
It happens to all of us who don’t have family around a lot to support, especially when we have babies and toddlers at home.
It happens less now that all my kids are at school or have left school.
So last week I was sick… it was so good to pack the kids off and then retreat to bed with my laptop, a pile of tissues and a ginger, honey and lemon drink.

This post is brought to you by Nuffnang and Vicks
I still felt grotty when I collected the twins from school. But my sniffles were seriously outclassed by Mr10, who showed me a few spots and said he didn’t feel well.
Then more and more spots appeared… and an email from school saying a child had chickenpox.
‘Make that two,’ I thought.

Poor wee man, he was quickly covered in spots, he even had them on the roof of his mouth.
It was time for me to get better fast and lose all these horrible coughs, colds, sneezes and snuffles.
I need to get well enough to have the energy to look after this wee boy and to give him the love and attention, and crucially, the hugs that he needed.
I popped to the pharmacist who heard my sorry tale and agreed that the new Vicks Action Day and Night Relief should work well.
Now Vicks is my go-to company for coughs and colds because Vicks is the brand we used when I was a little girl.

My mum rubbed Vicks VapoRub on my chest when I was a baby, and we used to use the Vicks nasal inhaler all the time. (We got a lot of colds when we were growing up in chilly Scotland!)
The newly available Vicks Action includes tablets for Day Relief and for Night Relief, and a combined Day & Night Relief, plus a Nasal Relief.
I went with the big guns, and purchased the combined Day and Night Relief.

The tablets contain paracetamol and the decongestant phenylephrine. The night tablets also have chlorpheniramine, an antihistamine.
Between them, these three ingredients help to combat the six symptoms of colds and flu:
- runny nose
- sore throat
- aches and pains
- headache
- blocked nose
- fever
And they worked quickly. What a blooming relief!
My spotty wee man couldn’t really do much about his chickenpox, but at least I could knock my cold on the head and be there for him. I used the two sets of day tablets and the night tablets for two days.
We had a slow few days, my wee man and myself. Lots of Star Wars movies watched, books read and a bit of baking done. And lots of soothing baths for him.

And plenty of hugs and cuddles.

Don’t you think they are the most healing thing of all?
There’s nothing worse than feeling sick, with sneezes and a runny nose and not wanting to hug your kids because:
1) You don’t want to pass the cold on
2) You feel so terrible you’ve got no strength to give them a proper hug.
Vicks are keen for all mums to be able to give their kids big, hearty Vicks Action hugs. The kind of hugs that make you feel great, as well as your kids.
And I felt I’d looked after myself, as well as looking after him. I want and need meds that are effective, and the Vicks Action Cold & Flu tablets made me feel better fast.
So now we’re both on the mend. And both of us have our sense of humour intact.

A boy who feels much better!

A drawing Mr10 did when sick, love this
And we’re expecting Ms10 to start getting her chickenpox spots in about 10 days time.
Does illness ever end when you have a few kids and winter is coming?
Any sniffles and snuffles in your house?
Are you able to be sick sometimes? Do the kids look after you?
Get well soon!
