Canberra: sleeping + eating + ice cream!
Hello! Here’s a post about where we slept and ate in Canberra. And even more crucially, where we found Canberra’s best ice cream!
Let’s get straight into it….
Three friends had let me know about Frugii as soon as they heard we were heading to Canberra. This small cafe has a big reputation, and has received lots of awards as well as media attention.
No wonder! It really is marvellous ice cream. And even better, it’s within walking distance of The Avenue Hotel where we stayed.
The flavours are lovely – and there’s nothing artificial in the ice cream at all, plus as many ingrediants as possibel are organic.
Frugii is at 30 Lonsdale Street in trendy Braddon, just a five minute drive from the centre of Canberra. It’s inside a little shopping centre but easy to find and parking is easy too.

The Avenue Hotel, Canberra
The Avenue is the newest 5 star hotel in Canberra and it’s very centrally located, in trendy Braddon just a couple of kilometres to the city centre.

The address is 80 Northbourne Avenue, that being the main route into Canberra from Sydney and so very, very easy for us to find.
The twins and I had a two bedroom apartment, with one king room and one room with two (large) single beds. The rooms are large and so are the bathrooms. There was a kitchenette for us to use – essential when travelling with kids. The lounge room had plenty of space too.

There’s an outdoor area between the two wings of the building where my two liked running, and the sitting room below.

The hotel’s restaurant is called Marble and Grain, there’s a bar and the restaurant too. We only had the buffet breakfast there, which we loved… we do love a buffet breakfast in our family. We ate from room service one night and enjoyed the spaghetti bolognese (kids) and salad and soup (me.)
We’d definitely recommend The Avenue Hotel. It was easy to find, the apartment was ideal for families and the carpark was easy to use and free. Wifi is free, also crucial for us, and the service was terrific.
I’d perhaps suggest asking for a room with windows looking into the courtyard as we found that the noise from traffic on the main road was a noticeable at times.

Eating Out At The Hamlet
The Hamlet is a sweet spot for eating out with kids. It’s an little urban village of food trucks and pop-up stores, all to be found at 16 Lonsdale Street in Braddon.
My twins went straight for the hot dog van, of course. I had a fab pie and we also tested out the pizza store and the milkshakes too.
