Bay Of Fires Walk Win – And A Great Night Out To Boot!
I’ve just had such a stroke of traveller’s good fortune and am foaming at the mouth to share it. Here goes!
It all started on a night where I could have been feeling very daunted. I’d been asked to be part of team ‘Macbeth’ at the Australian Society of Travel Writers Annual Trivia Night.
There would be 100+ people there, of whom I had met precisely one… the lovely Deborah Dickson-Smith of Little Nomads.
A girl could feel a bit nervous, but I didn’t. I was just in the mood to meet some new people and have a good old blether.

Clearly, a week of school holidays in the Sydney suburbs with the four boisterous bairns had done my head in. Sallying forth to the bright lights of our city centre (and adult company) was MOST appealing.
And the night had a Scottish theme; what could go wrong?
Some night’s out are just double the fun, and this was one of them.
There was not just a great bunch of people to meet, but some brain bending trivia: how many states DO share a border with Tennessee?
The MC was Glenn A. Baker… in a kilt, well mostly in the kilt but it did keep trying to escape floorwards.
This Trivia Night was sponsored by the City of Glasgow – my old home town – by Glengoyne Whisky and the very gracious Sir Stamford Hotel at Circular Quay.
There was much hilarity, a million blooming difficult trivia questions, a main course of seared salmon and then a lemon tart.
There were examples of the finest Scottish delicacies.
And then – eureka! – I won the major prize of the night, a 4-day guided walk around the very beautiful Bay of Fires in Tasmania’s North East Corner.
I’m still on a high, so I am.
The tricky question was: on an Ordnance Survey map, what do the letters ‘cg’ stand for? * answer below.
Someone suggested ‘closed gate’ and I immediately got the answer. You see it used to be my job to open the gates when we drove over the ‘cgs’ on our summer holidays on the West Coast of Scotland.
